The Master ofAm in Publications Design is administered by the Division of English and
Communications Design in the School of Communications Design. Combining theory
and practice, the liberal arts and skills training, words and images, the Master ofArts in
Publications Design integrates conceptual tbinking, writing, and graphic design-in both
traditional and new electronic media. Founded in tbe late 1970s, the program anticipated
the day when computers would make possible (if not require) such an integrated
approach. The evolving curriculum has consistently prepared students to adapt to often
rapid changes in publications technology.
Students come to tbe Publications Design program from a wide variety ofeducational
backgrounds and employment histories. Their undergraduate majors range from tbe predictable
(English, journalism, mass communication, graphic design, studio art) to tbe
unexpected (geography, music, foreign languages, biology, business administration).
Though many are already working in publications as writers or designers, a good number
have no experience in tbe field . What these students share is a fascination witb tbe interaction
of words and images and a commitment to exploring new modes of visual and verbal
communication.
The faculty includes scholars, literary and media critics, graphic designers, hypermedia
specialists, fiction and nonfiction writers, poets, film-makers and videographers, and publications
professionals who, like the program itself, combine the intellectual, the academic,
and tbe worldly. Also, adjunct professors from Baltimore's sophisticated publications community
share their expertise in advanced courses in writing, design, and business practices.
CURRICULAR OPTIONS
Applicants choose from among tbree options. The principal program in Publications
Design is appropriate for students who are interested in the integration of professional
writing and graphic design in public relations, advertising, corporate publications, journalism,
and magazine editing and design. The specialization in Creative Writing and
Publishing Arts is tailored for writers of fiction, literary nonfiction, and poetry who would
like to explore nontraditional avenues to publication ofcreative work. The specialization
in Media Design offers students the opportunity to focus on tbe relationships among communications
theory, video production, and tbe integration of print, graphic design, and
aural and visual images. Students in tbe principal program and either of tbe two specializa­
