That’s how it is. We go back a long way, so I’d be happy to help my friend,<br />

<strong>and</strong> his friend too. It’s not a who-owes-who sort of deal.<br />

To sum up this section: <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s cities, <strong>and</strong> more particularly <strong>in</strong> Beij<strong>in</strong>g, the<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpersonal relations of residents not only reflect the patterns of occupational,<br />

educational <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>come stratification; they play an important active role <strong>in</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> reproduc<strong>in</strong>g those patterns. They do this by giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividuals unequal access<br />

to scarce resources <strong>and</strong> opportunities: friends <strong>and</strong> acqua<strong>in</strong>tances can be an<br />

important source of help <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g a job, chang<strong>in</strong>g hous<strong>in</strong>g, secur<strong>in</strong>g a loan, <strong>and</strong> so<br />

on. As a source of material assistance <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation, as well as emotional support,<br />

such social ties are a vital element <strong>in</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g the behaviour <strong>and</strong> outlook of<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s ‘new rich’. Although these guanxi relations tend to be represented as<br />

<strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g purely economic transactions, they are more often based on longst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpersonal ties based on common experience <strong>and</strong> social status.
