Children’s Literature<br />

Selected readings from classic and contemporary literature for children from preschoolers to young adults. Emphasis on<br />

effectiveness <strong>of</strong> various works for different developmental stages. (Prerequisites: ENGL 101B<br />

Mythology<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> myths from around the world. Emphasis on the relationship between the myths and the cultures in which they arose<br />

along with a broad comparison <strong>of</strong> common tales within the myths. Features numerous comparisons to like Biblical accounts.<br />

ENGL360 3 units<br />

Critical Analysis <strong>of</strong> Literature (F)<br />

Introduction to contemporary trends in literary and cultural criticism, with an emphasis on the skills needed to perform effective<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> literary texts, including poetry, drama, and fiction. Includes readings from various eras <strong>of</strong> English and American<br />

literature. Service learning course. (Prerequisites: ENGL 220, 221 or 230)<br />

ENGL361 3 units<br />

Linguistics (S)<br />

Introduction to the field <strong>of</strong> Linguistics. Students will develop an understanding <strong>of</strong> the nature <strong>of</strong> language and modern grammar<br />

through the study <strong>of</strong> core areas including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Students will<br />

have the opportunities to read, write, and think critically about related fields such as historical linguistics, psycholinguistics,<br />

sociolinguistics, and animal communication. This course is designed for students who have a general interest in linguistics and<br />

modern grammar. (Prerequisites: ENGL 101B)<br />

ENGL362 3 units<br />

Advanced Composition<br />

Intensive study and practice in collegiate and pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional writing. Course emphasizes detailed formatting using MLA and<br />

APA guidelines, proposal writing, problem solving, and critical thinking. Course may be required for certain students at the<br />

discretion <strong>of</strong> their major advisor. (Prerequisite: ENGL 101B or equivalent)<br />

Advanced Creative Writing<br />

An continuation <strong>of</strong> the study <strong>of</strong> various genres <strong>of</strong> creative writing, with the opportunity to write and critique poetry and short<br />

fiction pieces. (Prerequisite: ENGL 286)<br />

Major British Authors<br />

Extensive reading and analysis <strong>of</strong> the work <strong>of</strong> a major figure or several contemporary figures in English literature, for example,<br />

Chaucer, Milton, Donne, or Dickens. (Prerequisite: ENGL 360 or 386)<br />
