History<br />

The History major at WJU is unique in that it not only reflects a traditional history curriculum found in the best Liberal Arts<br />

institutions but also requires several courses, such as Literature & Culture and Political Economy, <strong>of</strong>fered by the English and<br />

Public Policy departments. Consequently, this makes for a stronger, better-rounded major. Reflecting WJU’s deep roots in<br />

Evangelical Christianity, required courses in Early Church History and American Religious History add a further unique flavor to<br />

the program. Students studying history at WJU will find themselves well prepared for graduate study in a number <strong>of</strong> related<br />

disciplines in the Liberal Arts. Students planning on entering seminary will find in a WJU History major a suitable course <strong>of</strong> study<br />

as well – particularly when considered along with the Bible and Theology classes required <strong>of</strong> all students. In conjunction with the<br />

Teacher Education program, students should be well prepared for a single subject credential in History.<br />

Students who graduate with a History major will be able to:<br />

1. Demonstrate significant general knowledge in and understanding <strong>of</strong> history.<br />

2. Engage in informed dialog with culture.<br />

3. Evaluate the various cultural underpinnings and applications <strong>of</strong> the course <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

4. Describe various philosophical approaches to the discipline and determine how those approaches fit in with current<br />

approaches to other disciplines.<br />

5. Undertake significant primary research in a historical subject and communicate the findings.<br />

6. Think and write clearly and analytically.<br />

7. Be prepared for graduate study in a variety <strong>of</strong> programs.<br />

Students will also be able to, in conjunction with the Teacher Education program:<br />

1. Demonstrate subject matter competency for a single subject credential in History.<br />

2. Achieve an acceptable score on the Social Science CSET examination 114.<br />
