2010-2011<br />
In order to qualify for federal and state aid programs, an eligible student must:<br />
1. Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or eligible non-citizen.<br />
2. Be enrolled as a regular student in a degree program. The student must complete requirements for a degree within 150% <strong>of</strong><br />
the normal time allotted for that degree (e.g. six years to complete a four year bachelor’s program).<br />
3. Have a high school diploma, GED, certificate <strong>of</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> a state approved home school program, two years <strong>of</strong> college<br />
course work which are completely transferrable to a Bachelor’s degree or have passed a federally approved Ability to Benefit<br />
test with the last twelve months.<br />
4. Be enrolled for at least six units to qualify for state aid and student loans. The student must be enrolled for at least three units<br />
to qualify for federal grants and institutional aid. If units are dropped during the semester, the amount <strong>of</strong> financial aid<br />
awarded is subject to change.<br />
5. 5. Not be currently in default on a prior student loan or owe money to a Federal Student Aid program.<br />
Federal Aid<br />
Pell Grant: This federal grant, based on financial need, is available only to students working toward their first Bachelor’s degree.<br />
Awards range from $400 to $4,310.<br />
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG): This is a federal grant for students with exceptional need.<br />
Student must have received a Pell Grant to be eligible for any FSEOG funds.<br />
Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG): This is a federal grant available to any student who also qualifies for a Pell Grant. ACG<br />
eligibility is based on the academic rigor <strong>of</strong> a students’ high school curriculum as calculated by the Admissions Office.<br />
Federal Stafford Loan: This federal student loan program provides low interest loans from eligible banks to help pay educational<br />
expenses for students who attend at least half time (six units). Loans vary in amount based upon each student’s grade level and<br />
dependency status. Students may be eligible for a Subsidized Stafford Loan, in which the government pays the interest on the<br />
loan while students are in school and during the grace period, and/or an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, for which the student is<br />
responsible for paying the interest either during or after school. Repayment on Stafford Loans begins six months after a student<br />
graduates, drops below half-time or withdraws from school.<br />
Federal PLUS Loan (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students): This federal loan program provides loans at low interest rates to<br />
parents <strong>of</strong> eligible students (the student must still be ‘Dependent’ according to the FAFSA). There are three repayment options:<br />
1. Immediate repayment <strong>of</strong> loan principal and interest within sixty days <strong>of</strong> the full disbursement <strong>of</strong> the loan<br />
2. Interest only payments while the student remains in school<br />
3. Deferment <strong>of</strong> all payments until the student graduates or drops out <strong>of</strong> school (interest accumulates and is added to the<br />
principal <strong>of</strong> the loan)<br />
Federal Work Study (FWS): This program enables Pell eligible students to earn a portion <strong>of</strong> their financial aid award through<br />
federally subsidized employment through WJU. Work study jobs are available both on and <strong>of</strong>f campus.<br />
Veteran’s Educational Benefits & Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits: <strong>William</strong> <strong>Jessup</strong> <strong>University</strong> is approved for coordination <strong>of</strong><br />
both <strong>of</strong> these programs. Specific documentation will need to be provided by the student and it is the student’s responsibility to<br />
notify the Financial Aid Office <strong>of</strong> eligibility in either program.<br />
State Aid<br />
Cal Grant A: This grant, awarded by the State <strong>of</strong> California, is based on California residency, GPA and financial need. Students<br />
must submit the FAFSA and a GPA Verification Form by March 2 in order to be considered for Cal Grant. If you are homeschooled<br />
and a WASC accredited school cannot certify your high-school GPA, you can use your GED or ACT/SAT scores. The<br />
California Student Aid Commission will use your test score for Cal Grant consideration purposes.<br />
