California Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential<br />

WJU and the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>Studies</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer a teacher education program leading to careers in public, private and charter<br />

school systems. It is the goal <strong>of</strong> the department to prepare teachers by encouraging character development and demanding<br />

ethical behavior to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> the people teaching in schools throughout the world. The SPS <strong>of</strong>fering <strong>of</strong> the multiple<br />

subject credential is taught in an accelerated format with classes meeting just one night a week. The 30 unit program is just one<br />

year in length.<br />

The multiple subject credential, program is designed with a core <strong>of</strong> Christian values. The degree in Liberal <strong>Studies</strong> features strong<br />

curriculum in Bible and theology. Preparation for teaching includes completion <strong>of</strong> the California Commission on Teacher<br />

Credentialing approved program designed to help meet subject matter competence. The individual obtaining a multiple subject<br />

credential is authorized to teach all subjects in kindergarten through grade twelve in self-contained classes.<br />

Students seeking a single subject credential must satisfy subject matter competence requirements by passing the appropriate<br />

state examination(s) and coursework. Please contact the teacher education <strong>of</strong>fice for details.<br />

Graduates from the program are well-equipped, highly-principled individuals who understand diversity as a strength and who<br />

provide for individual differences in order to help their students prepare for a diverse and rapidly changing world. The faculty<br />

members in the Teacher Education program maintain high standards and expectations for themselves and the students who wish<br />

to serve in building a better world by entering the teaching pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />

<strong>of</strong> clearance (fingerprinting), CPR certification (adult, child, infant, and Tuberculosis clearance.<br />

Graduates from the program will demonstrate the ability to:<br />

1. Educate others with clarity and compassion<br />

2. Assess student learning<br />

3. Engage and support student learning<br />

4. Plan instruction and design learning experiences for students in K-12 self-contained classrooms<br />

5. Create and maintain effective environments for student learning<br />

6. Develop as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional educator<br />

7. Demonstrate necessary subject matter comprehension to teach the California State Framework<br />

8. Meet all <strong>of</strong> the requirements to be recommended for California Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential<br />

The credential program <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>William</strong> <strong>Jessup</strong> <strong>University</strong> is a state-approved program subject to revision by state or federal<br />

law. Therefore, this program requires completion <strong>of</strong> specific benchmark assessments in addition to the successful completion <strong>of</strong><br />

WJU coursework. Please consult the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>Studies</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice for specific current requirements. Current law requires<br />

all candidates for a California teaching credential to successfully complete the following examinations, preparation for some <strong>of</strong><br />

which WJU has incorporated into our program:<br />

CBEST California Basic Educational Skills Test (must be taken and passed before beginning program)<br />

CSET 101 Reading, Language and Literature, History and Social Science (must be taken and passed before beginning<br />

student teaching)<br />

CSET 102 Science, Mathematics (must be taken and passed before beginning student teaching)<br />
