This course studies the elements <strong>of</strong> effective communication. Increasing self awareness and improving personal effectiveness are<br />
emphasized. A study <strong>of</strong> scripture’s direction concerning communication and consideration <strong>of</strong> cultural traditions as they impact<br />
communication styles is included.<br />

Organizational Communication<br />
An introduction to the concepts <strong>of</strong> effective oral and written communication. It will enhance communication in building teams<br />
and in other organizational settings as well as interpersonal business exchanges.<br />
SP440XL 3 units<br />
Small Group Communication<br />
An integrated study, from theological and psychological perspectives, <strong>of</strong> effective small group leadership. Students will be<br />
equipped to lead small groups and to train others in small group leadership.<br />

TEDU501 1 unit<br />
Teaching and Learning in the Classroom<br />
Designed to introduce and explore the educational paradigm historically and philosophically. Students survey curriculum<br />
practices, teacher effectiveness and the concepts and issues related to K-12 education. Development <strong>of</strong> personal knowledge base<br />
and understanding <strong>of</strong> the following areas will be enhanced: 1) the competing purposes and values <strong>of</strong> schools in our society, 2) the<br />
nature <strong>of</strong> the teaching pr<strong>of</strong>ession, 3) the related impact <strong>of</strong> local, state, and federal government policies on schools, and 4) current<br />
education issues. Field experience totaling 30 hours is required in the area <strong>of</strong> observation. The student will relate how confidence<br />
and diligence are important traits in the character <strong>of</strong> a teacher. This course is a prerequisite for all other post-baccalaureate<br />
education courses. (Prerequisites: Certificate <strong>of</strong> Clearance as granted by CCTC, admission to SPS, Verification <strong>of</strong> passing CBEST<br />
examination, Evidence <strong>of</strong> taking CSET subtest 101, 102, 103)<br />
TEDU505 2 units<br />
Teaching Reading and Writing<br />
This course prepares the student to assess students’ language level, make appropriate lesson plans, develop methods to help the<br />
student learn to read and write, and evaluate the student’s progress toward being able to read and write the English language. The<br />
student will learn to make these applications for students with different grade and age levels. This course will prepare students for<br />
taking the RICA exam. (Prerequisite or taken concurrently: TEDU501)<br />
TEDU506 3 units<br />
Psychological Foundations <strong>of</strong> Teaching and Learning<br />
Designed to prepare students to be teachers <strong>of</strong> character who apply the principles <strong>of</strong> educational psychology in the classroom in<br />
order to maximize the learning experience <strong>of</strong> their students. Teaching and learning theories and attention to moral and faith<br />
development are critical aspects <strong>of</strong> this course. (Prerequisite or taken concurrently: TEDU501)<br />
