maybe I'll just have to mention it to others. At least a lot of<br />

people do try to accommodate themselves to us Aspies, even<br />

though we'll probably never be close to anyone (but over Academia/the<br />

Internet, that's okay).<br />

I also have ADD, so *that* often makes certain aspects of<br />

ASD more "severe." I don't know how to describe it yet.<br />

Heartbreaking.<br />

I went to high school in the least glamorous part of California,<br />

in a rural town with no shortage of dairy farms, meth<br />

labs, and Pontiac GTos sporting 20-inch rims. I was the only<br />

nerd for miles and miles, I thought, until I met Aaron Smith.<br />

Aaron was 6'2", blue-eyed, well-read, and willing to play<br />

Scrabble with me for six hours straight without a break. His<br />

cerebral traits alone would've made me putty in his hands, but<br />

I would soon discover that Aaron had scissorhands, useless for<br />

playing with putty.<br />

Most days Aaron sat in the back of our French class, staring<br />

out a tiny window in the door. He didn't speak unless<br />

called on, and then he'd respond with some brilliant comment<br />

to show he wasn't missing any class discussion.<br />

Aaron came and left the second the bell rang, so I never<br />

saw him up-close, not until the end of the quarter, when we<br />

sat next to each other for a midterm in the computer lab. I<br />

finished early and glanced at his screen: He was finished, too,<br />

and had a web browser open to LiveJournal. Intrigued that<br />

someone else had an account on the site — and wasn't afraid,
