Introduction<br />

Welcome to ‘Focus Group’ discussion at Auckland University <strong>of</strong> Technology. The data<br />

gathered from this focus group will f<strong>or</strong>m part <strong>of</strong> my PhD study. Thank you f<strong>or</strong> making the<br />

time to join us this (m<strong>or</strong>ning/afternoon/evening). My name is ‘Jashim Khan’; I am the<br />

principle researcher f<strong>or</strong> today’s session.<br />

The session will last no m<strong>or</strong>e than two hours and will involve a range <strong>of</strong> individual activities<br />

and group discussion.<br />

With your consent, we would like to audiotape the session. This will help to analyse the<br />

discussion material. It is essential that we speak one at a time. Otherwise, your valuable<br />

comments may be lost.<br />

Your contribution to this discussion will be received in the strictest confidence. We do not<br />

need to identify you – so you are free to use your name- <strong>or</strong> not during the discussion. Please<br />

remember that this is a group discussion so you do not need to direct all <strong>of</strong> your<br />

points/questions to me. They are to be shared with all. The goal is to have an enjoyable and<br />

inf<strong>or</strong>mative session. It is imp<strong>or</strong>tant that you feel comf<strong>or</strong>table. If at any time, you do not<br />

understand, <strong>or</strong> you feel uncomf<strong>or</strong>table with the session, please let me know so I can resolve<br />

any issues/problems.<br />

The refreshments are available throughout the session and we have allowed f<strong>or</strong> ‘micro’<br />

breaks.<br />

Objectives, activities and topics to be covered<br />

The objective <strong>of</strong> this focus group is to understand the effect <strong>of</strong> payment mode on purchase<br />

behaviour. We cannot provide any further details at this stage as this may prime your<br />

responses and may bias the findings. If you want to know m<strong>or</strong>e about what I am researching I<br />

will provide inf<strong>or</strong>mation at the end <strong>of</strong> the session.
