Our study is the first to demonstrate an association between AGE–RAGE axis and
AF in humans. Themain findingwas the clear relationship observed between AGEs
and sRAGE levels with the presence of AF, particularly evident in non-diabetic
patients. Even more, plasma levels of fluorescent AGEs and sRAGE correlated
positively with LA area and volume, and showed an independent associationwith
AF, adjusted by the presence of DM, LA distension and other confounding
variables.
There is a controversy about the relation between DM and AF 298 . From a general
point of view, our study showed no relationship between DM and AF. However,
this lack of association may be influenced, in the case of this study, by the good
metabolic control showed in the DM group of patients: up to 2/3 had levels of
HbA1c
