CAPÍTULO IV
Conclusion
In this study over a multivariate population with structural or functional heart
disease, AGEs and sRAGE levels correlated positively with AF, indicating a role
for AGE–RAGE axis in the arrhythmogenic atrial remodelling. AGEs and sRAGE
levels were found to be significantly associated with AF and this was independent
of DM, atrial distension and other confounding variables, suggesting that the
AGE–RAGE axis can play an important role in the development of AF. Our results
strongly suggest that AGEs are one of the clinically important molecules
associated with AF and the inhibition of their formation might help to attenuate the
development of atrial fibrosis, so they could be a new therapeutic target for the
treatment of atrial structural remodelling. This early work sets the stage for future,
larger investigations which will hopefully better define the biological role of AGE–
RAGE axis in AF.
