TWO IRISH TALES.<br />

The two following stories areboth takenfrom the manuscript Egerton<br />

1782 <strong>of</strong> the British Muséum. The subject which they both treat is love<br />

sickness and its guerison. The first is intilled 'AisHnge Oengusso', the<br />

vision <strong>of</strong> Oengus^, and is one <strong>of</strong> the ten remscéla or introductory taies to<br />

the Tain bô Cuailgne. The whole list <strong>of</strong> them is given in the book <strong>of</strong><br />

Leinster as follows :<br />

Our story is the third in this séries : Oengus<br />

mac in Oc, the celebra-<br />

ted Tuatha dé Danann chief <strong>of</strong> Brugh na Boinne, sees in dream a beauti-<br />

ful lady without being able to recognize her or to speak to her; a severe<br />

illness ensues until after a year the lady is found out with the help <strong>of</strong><br />

the fairy chief Bodb <strong>of</strong> Sid fer Femoin. It is Caer ib Ormeith the daugh-<br />

ter <strong>of</strong> Ethal Anbual from Sid Uamain in the territory <strong>of</strong> Ailill 7 Medb. At<br />

first her father is unwilling to give his daughter to Oengus saying that<br />

she has the power to be in the shape <strong>of</strong> a bird every second year. Howe-<br />

ver Oengus succeeds to win her and in conséquence he makes friendship<br />

with Ailill and Medb, and follows them to the Tâin bô Cuailgne.<br />

The place where Caer ib Ormeith is found by Bodb is called Loch<br />

Bell Draccon occruitt Cliach. On this Cliach we fmd a curious notice<br />
