kortverhaalsiklus funksioneer. Marais (2001:202<strong>–</strong>3) koppel dan ook die konsep van<br />

vertelling aan die Suid-Afrikaanse kortverhaalsiklus in Engels:<br />

In a general sense, then, it would appear that the inherent dualism or hybrid<br />

character of this genre <strong>–</strong> its position somewhere between the novel and the<br />

short story proper <strong>–</strong> lends it to the type of metafictional interrogations and<br />

technical innovations […] Moreover, it is surely not surprising that in a deeply<br />

ruptured society, such as this, where the national/historical narrative is in the<br />

process of being radically ―rewritten‖/imagined, that narrative fiction tends to<br />

reflect an acute sense of the storied nature of reality.<br />

Die vyf koherensiemerkers in die kortverhaalsiklus wat Dunn en Morris (1995:30<strong>–</strong>99) in<br />

hulle omvattende bespreking identifiseer <strong>–</strong> ruimte, ‘n enkele protagonis, ‘n<br />

saamgestelde protagonis, patrone en vertelling <strong>–</strong> bied ‘n waardevolle beginpunt om te<br />

verstaan hoe die koherensie tussen outonome tekste in ‘n kortverhaalsiklus tot stand<br />

kom.<br />

Die meeste ander beskouings oor die kortverhaalsiklus identifiseer soortgelyke aspekte<br />

wat koherensie daarstel, alhoewel dit selde so duidelik omskryf word soos Dunn en<br />

Morris se kenmerke. Mann (1989:8<strong>–</strong>14) identifiseer byvoorbeeld ook karakter<br />

(waaronder sy ‘n enkele en saamgestelde protagonis verstaan), tema en ruimte. Nagel<br />

(2004:16) noem dat hierdie drie aspekte die duidelikste koherensiemerkers in die<br />

kortverhaalsiklus is.<br />

Lundén staan egter krities teenoor Ingram (1971), Mann (1989) en Dunn en Morris<br />

(1995) se fokus op aspekte wat koherensie skep, omdat hierdie beskouings dikwels die<br />

eenheid beklemtoon ten koste van die versplinterde aard van die narratief wat tot stand<br />

kom juis deur die spanning tussen outonomie en koherensie. Met verwysing na Mann<br />

(1989) skryf Lundén (1999:24):<br />

[W]hile she brings out many subtle connections between the stories in theme,<br />

plot, myth, imagery, and character, she does not seem particularly aware of the<br />

silences, gaps, lacunae, and contradictions that characterize these composites.<br />

She fails to see how many themes find expression in the narrative strategies of<br />

disruption.<br />

Vir Lundén raak die fokus op eenheid in die kortverhaalsiklus veral problematies<br />

wanneer die genre vanweë sy fragmentariese aard aangewend word om temas van<br />

isolasie te ondersoek, soos in Winesburg, Ohio van Anderson.<br />

Ook Dunn en Morris (1995) se beskouing van die kortverhaalsiklus as ‘n ―saamgestelde<br />

roman‖ is volgens Lundén problematies, veral omdat die koherensiemerkers wat hulle<br />

identifiseer, ook koherensie in die roman skep en dus nie die spesifisiteite van die<br />

kortverhaalsiklus voldoende in ag neem nie. Aangesien karakters, ruimte, tyd, plot en<br />

vertellers die basiese elemente van enige narratief is, kan die kortverhaalsiklus nie op<br />

grond daarvan van die roman onderskei word nie.<br />

Nagel (2004:15) beklemtoon dan ook dat die sentrale onderskeid tussen die<br />

kortverhaalsiklus en die roman die outonomie van die afsonderlike teksgedeeltes is:<br />

Unlike the stories in a cycle, the subordinate units of a novel, its episodes or<br />

chapters, are incomplete in themselves, dependent for artistic completion on the<br />

other units that comprise the whole. When chapters from novels were<br />
