ABSTRACT<br />
The Barren Lives novel, from the Brazilian writer Graciliano Ramos, was written in<br />
the year of 1938. Fabiano and his family’s miserable wan<strong>de</strong>ring in the Northeastern<br />
interior is an accusation of the aridity’s sad reality, whom for centuries enslaves and<br />
kills inhabitants of the Brazilian Northeast interior. In 1963, Nélson Pereira dos<br />
Santos, with the same accusation i<strong>de</strong>als, a<strong>da</strong>pted this novel to the movies, by the<br />
Cinema Novo Movement optics. I took to the audiences around of the world the sad<br />
situation of the Northeastern interior. This study is <strong>de</strong>nominated Paper and film: from<br />
the <strong>liter</strong>ary to the cinematographic mounting in Barren Lives. It has for main objective<br />
analyzing the transposition from the hipotext for the hipertext. This dissertation<br />
presents the Graciliano Ramos' biography and his Marxist political conceptions,<br />
focusing the oppressed characters and their oppressors, in constant shocks. The<br />
<strong>liter</strong>ary narrative dismounting is analyzed. It is also <strong>de</strong>scribed the Cinema Novo<br />
Mouvement, as well as the relative subjects of the cinematographic transposition,<br />
fi<strong>de</strong>lity and mass culture. Finally, the hipertext and its filmic narrative dismounting are<br />
objects of analysis. This work is theoretically based on the Sociological Literary<br />
Criticism, the Semiotics and the Dialectics. As conclusion, the cinematographic<br />
transposition from director Nélson Pereira dos Santos, using the filmic narrative’s<br />
specific resources, reached the goal of maintaining the social accusation character of<br />
Graciliano Ramos' <strong>liter</strong>ary work.<br />
