ABSTRACT
The Barren Lives novel, from the Brazilian writer Graciliano Ramos, was written in
the year of 1938. Fabiano and his family’s miserable wandering in the Northeastern
interior is an accusation of the aridity’s sad reality, whom for centuries enslaves and
kills inhabitants of the Brazilian Northeast interior. In 1963, Nélson Pereira dos
Santos, with the same accusation ideals, adapted this novel to the movies, by the
Cinema Novo Movement optics. I took to the audiences around of the world the sad
situation of the Northeastern interior. This study is denominated Paper and film: from
the literary to the cinematographic mounting in Barren Lives. It has for main objective
analyzing the transposition from the hipotext for the hipertext. This dissertation
presents the Graciliano Ramos' biography and his Marxist political conceptions,
focusing the oppressed characters and their oppressors, in constant shocks. The
literary narrative dismounting is analyzed. It is also described the Cinema Novo
Mouvement, as well as the relative subjects of the cinematographic transposition,
fidelity and mass culture. Finally, the hipertext and its filmic narrative dismounting are
objects of analysis. This work is theoretically based on the Sociological Literary
Criticism, the Semiotics and the Dialectics. As conclusion, the cinematographic
transposition from director Nélson Pereira dos Santos, using the filmic narrative’s
specific resources, reached the goal of maintaining the social accusation character of
Graciliano Ramos' literary work.
