und Gänsebraten mit Rotkohl. Wenn man
dann den Weihnachtsbaum betrachtet hatte
und die Gaben verteilt waren, bekam jeder
ein Gläschen Punsch und Krapfen, mit
Äpfeln gefüllt.
Das Festmahl ist natürlich auch in Dänemark
ein Höhepunkt der Weihnachtsfeier, und auch
hier werden zu diesem Anlass Gänse-, Entenoder
Schweinebraten bevorzugt. Eine Besonderheit
ist die Zubereitung der Kartoffeln, die mit
Zucker braun glasiert auf den Tisch kommen.
Und auch der schon als Beruhigungsmittel für
die nissen bekannte Reispudding hat hier seinen
festen Platz, als Vorspeise namens julegrød oder
als Dessert mit Sahne und heißen Kirschen, ris à
l'amande genannt. In einer Portion dieser Voroder
Nachspeise ist eine ganze Mandel versteckt.
Der glückliche Finder erhält die sogenannte
mandelgave, ein großes rosarotes Marzipanschwein
– vorausgesetzt, er hat nicht zu hastig
gegessen und die Mandel irrtümlich zerbissen:
Das bringt Pech, und das Marzipanschwein wird
unter den übrigen Gäste des Weihnachtsmahls
aufgeteilt.
Wenn es allen köstlich mundet, sich die rechte
weihnachtliche Stimmung eingestellt hat und
vor allem die kleinen Familienmitglieder mit
ihren Geschenken zufrieden sind, dann findet es
der Däne ausgesprochen hyggeligt.
Christmas and New Year’s Greeting:
“Glaedelig Jul og glaedelig
nytar!”
When visiting a Danish farmhouse during the pre-
Christmas season one may easily be awoken in the
middle of the night by clattering coming from the
kitchen or the larder. The nissen, mischievous goblins
living in the attic who spend the largest part of the
year fast asleep, are responsible for this. Only on
December 13 do they awake and expect their fellow
occupants to feed them regularly until the end of the
year has arrived. Those who see one of these nisse for

the first time will instantly recognise them by their
distinct clothing: grey woollens, a red woollen hat
and white wooden clogs – hence the fine clattering.
Traditionally, it is the duty of the children to ensure
that every evening a bowl of rice pudding is set aside
for the nissen; a very responsible task indeed, beware
if these little gnomes are left hungry! They may become
genuinely displeased, playing their pranks,
throwing nuts at people and making sure that the
Christmas tree loses all of its needles before the gifts
are handed out, stealing the children’s Christmas
gifts or swapping them, causing much more nuisance.
In a worst case scenario, the nissen will get so mad
that they refuse to calm down for the rest of the entire
year. Danish children, however, have another good
reason to keep the flock of homey nissen in good
spirits. It is, after all, their duty to show the julemand
– such is the Danish name of Father Christmas
– into the house and assist him in unloading his
gifts from the sleigh.
That the nissen happened to have set their alarm for
December 13 is because of Saint Lucia appearing on
this day, who is not only worshipped with festive
processions in jSweden and jItaly, but also in
Denmark. The magnificent appearance of the beautiful
girl wearing a crown of candles and who
announces winter solstice is something the curious
nissen do not intend to miss.
The day before Christmas Eve bears its own name
in Denmark, notably lillejuleaften. December 23 is
traditionally the day on which the Christmas tree is
decorated – an event which Danish children must
not attend. The official reason for this secrecy is for
the tree in all its glory to be an even greater surprise
for the little ones on the day when the gifts are handed
out, the actual juleaften. Rumour also has it,
however, that children are not to pick up on the vast
amounts of gløgg, or mulled Danish wine, being
enjoyed – which may have rather un-Christmassy
consequences.
