Heißen die Bewohner von Zypern „Zyprer“
oder „Zyprioten“? Die Antwort: sowohl als auch!
Zyprer nennen sich die türkischstämmigen Inselbewohner
im Norden, während die griechischstämmige
Mehrheit im Süden die Zyprioten
sind.
Die Geschichte Zyperns ist leider seit vielen
Jahren auch eine Geschichte des Unfriedens
zwischen diesen beiden Bevölkerungsgruppen.
Seit Jahrzehnten sind die schwelenden Konflikte
zwischen Zyprioten und Zyprern immer wieder
zu gewalttätigen Konflikten aufgeflammt, die auch
vor dem Weihnachtsfest nicht Halt machten.
Die „Blutweihnacht von Nikosia“ im Jahre 1963
mit Toten und Verletzten hat traurige Berühmtheit
erlangt.
Der Konflikt zwischen den beiden Bevölkerungsgruppen
reicht bis in die jüngste Vergangenheit.
Bevor Zypern der EU beitrat, sollte eine
Volksabstimmung im April 2004 die Wiedervereinigung
des Landes herbeiführen, doch die
Zyprioten stimmten dagegen. Dennoch dürfen
EU-Bürger die bisherige Demarkationslinie
zwischen Nord und Süd seither gefahr- und
straflos überschreiten und die gesamte Insel gilt
seit dem 1. Mai 2004 als Mitglied der EU.
So darf man hoffen, dass auch auf Zypern die
Gutwilligen zuletzt den längeren Atem behalten
und die Insel zu einem „Musterstaat“ der friedlichen
Koexistenz von Christen und Muslimen
in Europa wird.

Are the inhabitants of Cyprus called ‘Cyprians’ or
‘Cypriots’? The reply: both are correct! The islanders
to the north and of Turkish descent call themselves
Cyprians, whereas the majority living in the south
and who are of Greek origin, call themselves
Cypriots.
Unfortunately, the history of Cyprus has been marked
for many years as a history of discord between
these two peoples. For decades, the smouldering conflicts
between Cyprians and Cypriots have time and
time again erupted into conflicts which do not even
come to a halt at Christmas. The target of the “Bloody
Christmas” in 1963 was Nicosia, ending in many
fatalities and people injured, a sad claim to fame.
The conflict between the two groups of people goes
back into the recent past. Before Cyprus joined the
EU, a referendum was held in April of 2004 to bring
about the country’s reunification, but the Cypriots
voted against it. Nonetheless, EU citizens can cross
the current demarcation line between north and
south without risk and retribution, and since May 01,
2004 the entire island is deemed a member of the
EU.
There remains the hope that even in Cyprus those
with a positive attitude have a longer breath and
that the island will become an ‘exemplary state’ of
peaceful co-existence between Christians and Muslims
in Europe.
