Once again, we will be bringing the year to an end with a work of reference of a slightly different nature.
After all, it belongs to our core competences to compile, to market and to produce different directories like the
Yellow Pages, telephone directories, trade show catalogues and classified directories – therefore it was yet again
a rather delightful undertaking for us to illustrate Christmas in a work of reference of a very special kind.
This time around, we targeted Christmas traditions from the countries of the European Union: The EU
counted a few additions in 2004, increasing the number of member countries to 25. Far before May 01, 2004
there was a great variety of Christmas traditions inside the European Community. After the ten new
countries had become members this variety has increased. And certainly there still is a need of information
or can you say why huge trunks are being rolled around in Latvia during the Christmas days, or how the
Slowakian nut oracle works, or why brooms are cleaned in Estonia just before Christmas Eve? We hope that
you will enjoy our small European Christmas atlas – and that the present book encourages you to become more
deeply acquainted with our neighbouring countries and their very own individuality and charm, such as by
travelling there (not only) at Christmas; and the recipes are most likely to convey a very good first taste of the
specialities of our European neighbours.
We wish you and your family the best of health and good fortune for the Advent season and the Christmas
holidays; to all of us, we wish that the appeasing spirit of Christmas will promote peace to the world, beyond
all frontiers.

Auch dieses Jahr beschließen wir mit einem etwas anderen Nachschlagewerk. Schließlich gehört
es zu unseren Kernkompetenzen, unterschiedliche Verzeichnisse wie GelbeSeiten, Telefonbücher,
Messekataloge und Branchennachschlagewerke zusammenzustellen, zu vermarkten und zu produzieren
– und so war es wieder eine reizvolle Aufgabe für uns, das Thema Weihnachten in einem
Nachschlagewerk ganz besonderer Art darzustellen.
Diesmal sind die weihnachtlichen Bräuche in den Ländern der Europäischen Union unser Thema:
Die EU hat ja 2004 Zuwachs bekommen und ist auf 25 Mitglieder gewachsen. Schon vor dem 1. Mai
2004 gab es eine große Vielfalt weihnachtlicher Bräuche in der Europäischen Union. Seit der
Aufnahme der zehn neuen Mitglieder ist dieses Spektrum noch weiter geworden. Und gewiss besteht
hier noch einiger Informationsbedarf – oder können Sie sagen, warum zu Weihnachten in Lettland
mächtige Baumstämme durch die Gegend gewälzt werden; wie das slowakische Nussorakel funktioniert;
oder warum vor Heiligabend in Estland die Besen gereinigt werden? Wir hoffen, dass Ihnen
unser kleiner europäischer Weihnachtsatlas gefallen wird – und dass das vorliegende Buch Sie dazu
ermuntert, unsere Nachbarländer in ihrer jeweiligen Individualität und ihrem je eigenen Reiz noch
besser kennen zu lernen – zum Beispiel durch Reisen dorthin (nicht nur) zur Weihnachtszeit. Aber
auch die Koch- und Backrezepte vermitteln bestimmt schon einen guten Vorgeschmack auf die
Eigenheiten unserer europäischen Nachbarn.
Für die Advents- und Weihnachtstage wünschen wir Ihnen und Ihrer Familie Gesundheit und
Glück; und uns allen wünschen wir, dass der versöhnende Geist des Weihnachtsfestes über alle
Grenzen hinweg den Frieden in der Welt befördern möge.
