„Europa muss den
Mut haben, sich als
Einwanderungskontinent
soziale Grundsicherung. Man soll diejenigen arbeiten lassen,
“Europe must have
the courage to declare
itself an immigration
continent”
Michael Genner “In this age of globalisation, it is impossible
to do without the free exchange of people, thoughts, economic
strengths and other interests. Although Europe can
try to isolate itself, if it succeeds it will waste away intellectually,
biologically and economically.
The so-called economic refugees who overcome great dangers
to reach Europe bring inventiveness, staying power
and pioneering spirit. They already contribute a great deal
of development aid to their countries of origin (much more
than state help) and can make a great contribution to the
economic development of Europe, but only if we allow it. An
open Europe must not restrict access to the labour market.
There can be no more protected jobs for natives.
The free labour market could be balanced by the provision
of basic social safeguards. We should let those who want to
do so work, while those who do not want to work should be
left alone. By leaving the labour market they, in fact, render
a service to society, as they vacate jobs for hardworking,
capable and inventive workers from the East or the Third
World. Europe must have the courage to declare itself an
immigration continent.”
Michael Genner is chairperson of the organization “Asyl in Not”. In February 2006, at an event organised by the
Green Party in Innsbruck, he called upon the population to provide sheltered spaces for refugees. Proceedings,
subsequently started against him by the public prosecutor’s office, were dropped.
