SOURCE OF SUBJECTS<br />

Experimental patients<br />

The experimental group was compiled from two separate datasets. The first<br />

experimental dataset included patients who received high-dose chemotherapy/stem<br />

cell <strong>transplantation</strong> as part of a prospective phase II clinical trial at the University of<br />

Nebraska Medical Centre (UNMC). The principal investigators for this study were<br />

Drs. Elizabeth Reed <strong>and</strong> Stefano Tarantolo. The second experimental dataset<br />

consisted of information on patients who received high-dose therapy/stem cell<br />

<strong>transplantation</strong> in phase II trials at the Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre<br />

(NEORCC). The principal investigator for these trials was Dr. Stefan Gluck.<br />

Control patients<br />

The Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre (ORCC) has a wide referral base of -1.5<br />

million people <strong>and</strong> sees ~800 new cases of breast cancer annually (internal data). After
