Hematologic reconstitution<br />

Selected CD34 +<br />

cells were used for the support of 13 high-dose therapy cycles<br />

(Table 3). The remaining 18 patients had not been transplanted at the time of this<br />

report. On average, a mean number of 7.4 ± 1.2X10 6<br />

CD34 +<br />

cells/kg were<br />

autografted. As assessed by PI exclusion, the mean viability of the CD34 +<br />

cells<br />

after thawing was 93 ± 1.87%. The patients engrafted with a mean time to<br />

leukocyte (1.0X10 9<br />

/L), neutrophil (0.5X10 9<br />

/L), <strong>and</strong> platelet (20.0X10 9<br />

/L)<br />

recovery of 12.8 ± 0.7, 13.6 ± 0.7, <strong>and</strong> 14.5 ± 1.3 days, respectively (Fig. 2).The<br />

patients remained in hospital for a median of 15 days (range 12-21) after<br />

autografting <strong>and</strong> had a median of 3 days of fever (range 1-10). They required a<br />

median of six platelet <strong>and</strong> four erythrocyte transfusions (range 2-10 <strong>and</strong> 2-8,<br />

respectively).<br />

The engraftment ability of the CD34 +<br />

autografts was compared with that of<br />

unmanipulated PBSC autografts containing 9 ± 0.7 X10 6<br />

CD34 +<br />

cells/kg which<br />

were used for the support of high-dose therapy in 104 patients. The mean time<br />
