Diary.<br />

&quot;This day in Chapter I was betrayed into unseemly anger.<br />

O Lord, forgive me ! I will not let the sun go down upon my<br />

anger. O Lord, give me self-denial as a Christian, and more<br />

regard for the feelings of others, through Jesus Christ.&quot;<br />

And again, a few days later :<br />

&quot;At times I feel greatly depressed here by the uncongenial<br />

spirits amongst whom I am thrown. But, O Lord, give me to<br />

understand that nothing gi;eat was ever done without effort,<br />

and amidst much opposition. Lord, give me wisdom, zeal, love,<br />

and make me faithful in every work. This day we have been<br />

engaged in very important business as to the transfer of our estates<br />

to the Commissioners. Guide us, O Lord. May all the matter<br />

redound to Thy glory. We hope to rebuild our Cathedral, and<br />

thus infuse a love for the outward house of God.&quot;<br />

In this hope he was not disappointed. Under the<br />

direction of Mr. Christian as architect, the restoration<br />

of the very dilapidated Cathedral was taken in hand at<br />

once. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners had arranged,<br />

in connection with the transfer of the estates, that ,15,000<br />

should be expended<br />

on the Cathedral fabric. The roof<br />

in the south transept ; and the east wall and windows,<br />

which had been in a disgraceful state, were renewed at<br />

while other necessary changes of structure and<br />

arrangement were effected in various parts of the building.<br />

During the progress of these works he was able, to his<br />

great satisfaction, to reside more continuously than had at<br />

first been possible, and the record of his multifarious<br />

labour, in matters great and small, for the good of Carlisle<br />

and its inhabitants, stands in strange contrast to what<br />

would at that time have been usually deemed appropriate<br />

to the position of a Cathedral dignitary. The home<br />

was a very bright and happy one, and there seems by
