DEAR LORD BISHOP, I have to thank your Lordship<br />

very sincerely for the great kindness of your letter. I hope<br />

I am not doing wrong in saying that it is but one more of<br />

those many acts of friendliness on the part of your Lordship<br />

which make it personally so very grievous to me that I should be<br />

paining you by acting under the supreme obligation of obeying<br />

my own fullest and most carefully formed convictions as to the<br />

teaching of the Church of England, of the whole Church Catholic,<br />

and, above all, of the Gospel of Christ. I do not presume to<br />

obtrude upon your Lordship the reasons of my conviction. They<br />

have been so often urged most ably in various quarters, that for me<br />

but I venture to think<br />

to reiterate them would be very unseemly ;<br />

that your Lordship is one of the last men in England to wish me<br />

to act contrary to my convictions, or to withhold any part of<br />

that which I conceive to be the Gospel of Christ from those<br />

whom I have to teach. I cannot be ignorant that the full asser<br />

tion of that which I am convinced is the truth may lead me into<br />

serious inconveniences, but I hope that the same God who has<br />

revealed it will, by His grace, carry me through any difficulties<br />

which He may suffer to come in my way. Believe me, my dear<br />

Lord Bishop, yours very truly and respectfully,<br />
