cities is represented by the ordinate value 0. Light energy loss data are from Isobe <strong>and</strong><br />

Hamamura (1998), with estimated corrections to no-snow conditions for Minnesota, St Louis,<br />

Kansas City MO, Buffalo <strong>and</strong> Denver. US cities population data used are from FBI (1998),<br />

with missing data from Fight<strong>Crime</strong>FortWayne (1999). Numerical data are in Tables 5 <strong>and</strong> 6.<br />

The regression line slope is reliably different from zero (p < 0.01).<br />
