The entries are for all 21 USA cities included in Isobe <strong>and</strong> Hamamura (1998). They are in<br />
descending order of annual upward light energy loss per unit area, as observed by satellite.<br />
Estimated values for no-snow conditions are shown in parentheses. Population <strong>and</strong> UCR crime<br />
rate data are from FBI (1998) except for St Louis, Buffalo, <strong>and</strong> Kansas City, which were missing;<br />
instead, their UCR data for 1998 are from Fight<strong>Crime</strong>FortWayne (1999). The Morgan Quitno<br />
(2000) score of weighted UCR crime rate is positive if above <strong>and</strong> negative if below the mean<br />
weighted UCR crime rate. The crime ranking is based on this score for 315 US cities. The UCR<br />
crime rate is plotted against upward light energy loss per unit area in Figure 7. The crime score is<br />
used in later figures.
