yellowish red flowers. The fruits resemble figs, and are thorny.<br />

They are edible when fully ripe.<br />

The young soft stem can be<br />

eaten as a vegetable. The juice is used for washing, whence the<br />

Japanese name Saboten (soap) is derived.<br />
