Nepotism<br />

To minimize possible charges of favoritism and improper management, <strong>the</strong> following<br />

relatives of (<strong>the</strong> mayor), any member of <strong>the</strong> , and <strong>the</strong> manager<br />

are disqualified from paid employment with <strong>the</strong><br />

: spouse, child, parent,<br />

grandchild, grandparent, bro<strong>the</strong>r, sister or <strong>the</strong> spouses of any of <strong>the</strong>m. This prohibition shall not<br />

apply to any person presently working for <strong>the</strong> ___ ___ _ ____, or who was working for<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />

prior to <strong>the</strong> election or appointment of a relative.<br />

Sample 2 - Employment of Relatives<br />

Due to <strong>the</strong> fact that family relationships create intense emotions which may interfere with<br />

<strong>the</strong> work relationship by promoting favoritism, difficulty in grievance resolution and problems<br />

between <strong>the</strong> family members' positions, two or more members of <strong>the</strong> same immediate<br />

family who share a household shall not be employed to do work under <strong>the</strong> same immediate<br />

supervisor or in <strong>the</strong> same department. They may, however, work in different departments.<br />

Employment of family members under <strong>the</strong>se circumstances is acceptable.<br />

This rule will not apply to seasonal employees who work less than six months per year or<br />

persons classified as "extra help."<br />

Transition Provisions. Employees who through marriage or o<strong>the</strong>r' circumstances fall<br />

under <strong>the</strong> jurisdiction of this rule will be allowed three calendar months from <strong>the</strong> date of such<br />

marriage or o<strong>the</strong>r circumstances to establish compliance.<br />

In ei<strong>the</strong>r case, it shall remain totally at discretion of <strong>the</strong> affected employees to determine<br />

which family member resigns from employment with <strong>the</strong><br />

. It will be <strong>the</strong><br />

responsibility of <strong>the</strong><br />

to assist meritorious employees with transfers or referrals<br />

whenever possible.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> event that <strong>the</strong> family members involved cannot satisfactorily decide which family<br />

member shall transfer or resign, <strong>the</strong><br />

retains <strong>the</strong> right to transfer or terminate<br />

affected employees at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> transition period so as to establish compliance with this<br />

section.<br />

Sample 3 - Employment of Relatives<br />

No person shall be hired by <strong>the</strong><br />

in a position where <strong>the</strong> person will supervise<br />

or be supervised by a member of <strong>the</strong> person's immediate family. This prohibition applies to<br />

supervision at any level, whe<strong>the</strong>r immediate or thorough subordinate supervisors, and applies<br />

to any situation where control or direction of <strong>the</strong> relative's work covered cause a conflict of<br />

interest. Immediate family is defined as one's spouse, parent, son or daughter, sister or bro<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

grandparent or grandchild.<br />

If any employees become related by marriage after employment, <strong>the</strong><br />

will<br />

attempt to rearrange supervisory responsibilities so as to remove any potential conflict. If such<br />

an arrangement cannot be reached, <strong>the</strong> employees involved will be given <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />

resolve <strong>the</strong> conflict through resignation. If this cannot be done, <strong>the</strong><br />

reserves <strong>the</strong> right<br />

to resolve <strong>the</strong> conflict through termination of one of <strong>the</strong> employees.<br />
