All states are winners.
Almost every region is
better off.
Some country regions benefit
the most.
While all states are winners from the efficiency gains likely to be brought
by e-commerce, some states are likely to benefit more than others. States
that have a high reliance on commodity export activities will have to deal
with larger offsetting costs.
Looking even closer at local impacts almost every one of the 57 Statistical
Divisions used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics to examine local
impacts is better off as a result of the changes brought by greater use of
e-commerce and the benefits are spread evenly around the nation. Over
50 local regions can expect a long run increase in Gross Regional Product
of between one and four per cent, while the biggest employment effect is
an increase of 1.4 per cent.
The regions that benefit the most include country regions. Most country
regions can expect a lift from the effect e-commerce has in compressing
distance and making goods and services more accessible. Country areas
that rely on tourism and related activities can expect an even larger boost.
The regional analysis is obtained by disaggregating results that apply
nationally. A different result may occur if regions adopted e-commerce at
different rates. This more detailed analysis is the subject of further work
to be released by April 2000.
