Educational Attainment and Spoken Language
The final table in this section looks at the educational attainment of the 65 years and over
population. While the pattern is not a surprise, following the patterns set up throughout
this section, the range of differences across sectors is quite informative. As would be
expected, Sector 12 contains the most highly educated seniors with 81 percent graduating
from high school and 33 percent having at least a college diploma. Since a high school
diploma was often the most that one needed to acquire a good paying job when the
seniors were starting out in the workforce, low levels of post-high school education are to
be expected. Sector 10 and, to a lesser extent, Sector 4 show relatively high levels of
post-secondary education. Sector 5 in Southwest Detroit had the lowest rates of
education with only 36 percent graduating from high school and 3 percent receiving a
college diploma. Considering many of the other results, one would not be likely to
predict that seniors in Sector 5 would have the least education. However, when one
realizes that this is a heavily Latino population with many of the seniors being Mexican
immigrants, the lack of education becomes more understandable. Unfortunately, the
issue of dropping out of high school and not going on to college continues to be a
problem in the Latino community – even with American-born youth. Lower levels of
education are also evident in those sectors where poverty is highest – 2 and 11.
