The previous section described the numbers of seniors living in households vs. group quarters. It also described the living arrangements – living alone or with others – of the senior population in households. Now we look at A Demographic Profile of Seniors in PSA 1-C 22
whether these seniors are owning or renting their living quarters. 10 Table 22 shows that seniors are primarily homeowners. Almost 9 of every 10 householders between 55 and 75 years of age own their home. This share drops slightly to 79 percent for householders Table 22. While home ownership is an important asset, these numbers indicate a large segment of the senior population living in single-family dwellings, often quite separate from neighbors and family. Home health care and chore services become a very important part of a service portfolio. 10 The tenure data are based on senior householders by age, rather than all seniors living in households.
