relatively few nursery schools compared to other districts.<br />

4.1.6 Secondary Schools:<br />

At independence (1961) the region had only 7 secondary schools.<br />

By the end of 1994, she had the highest number of private<br />

secondary schools in the whole country and was among the three<br />

leading regions with the highest number of Public Secondary<br />

Schools. The region had 62 private secondary schools while<br />

Kagera and Iringa had 23 and 32 respectively. Public secondary<br />

schools in <strong>Kilimanjaro</strong> were 15 while in Kagera and Iringa they<br />

were 9 and 10 respectively. The regions with the lowest number<br />

of Public Secondary Schools were Singida, Kigoma and Mbeya.<br />

Those with the lowest number of private secondary schools were<br />

Coast, Lindi, Kigoma and Mtwara. Odd as it may sound,<br />

Mtwara by the end of 1992 had no private secondary school.<br />

Table LIX below indicates the place <strong>Kilimanjaro</strong> region occupies<br />

in terms of both the number of public and private secondary<br />

schools in <strong>Tanzania</strong> Mainland while table LX indicates distribution<br />

of secondary schools by district in the region.<br />
