3.0 ECONOMIC INFRASTRUCTURE<br />

3.1 Introduction:<br />

Comparatively, <strong>Kilimanjaro</strong> region is well served by a network of<br />

roads which link the rural population clusters and also provides<br />

easy communication with the surrounding areas. In addition, there<br />

is a reliable railway line from Dar es Salaam to Moshi<br />

(Municipality of the region) via Tanga, ending up in Arusha Town.<br />

Another railway line extends from Moshi to Voi in Kenya at the<br />

border. The region also enjoys good Air service provided<br />

through <strong>Kilimanjaro</strong> International Airport (KIA) and Moshi<br />

Airport. With regard to power supply, <strong>Kilimanjaro</strong> region is one<br />

of the few regions in the country benefitting from Japanese Rural<br />

Electrification Programme, which has made possible the<br />

electrification of almost all business centers in the region.<br />

3.2 Roads Network<br />

There are three classes of roads in the region, namely trunk roads,<br />

regional roads and feeder/district roads. Administratively, trunk<br />

roads fall under the Ministry of Works, while the Regional,<br />

District and feeder roads are the responsibilities of the Regional<br />

Government and District Authorities respectively.<br />

Although, the road density of <strong>Kilimanjaro</strong> Region is fairly<br />

developed compared with that of other parts of the country, it<br />

varies considerably between different districts within the region. It<br />
