At National level, the 1988 Census showed that <strong>Kilimanjaro</strong> had<br />

the highest literacy rate of 80.8 percent followed by Dar es<br />

salaam, 80.7 percent, while the lowest literacy rate was recorded<br />

in Shinyanga region (48.3 percent). Table LXIII below shows<br />

the percentage of literacy by region.<br />

Urban areas show a consistently higher literacy rate than rural<br />

areas. This is the national trend (Table XIV).<br />
