There are about 52,000 heactares of land under traditional<br />

irrigation in the region. Crops like coffee, bananas, vegetables<br />

and fruits are grown in these areas. Modern irrigation is at Arusha<br />

Chini area with 7,800 ha. Under sugar cane. Lower Moshi and<br />

Ndungu are among modern irrigation schemes with about 900-<br />

1100 ha. Problems facing irrigation activities are mainly<br />

inadequate water supply for irrigation mainly river water, and<br />

proper irrigation management systems. In order to curb this<br />

bottleneck the region needs to explone the possibility of getting<br />

underground water or attempts should be made to draw water<br />

from Miwaleni project/kikuletwa.<br />

6.2 Livestock:<br />

Dairy cattle farming has much potential in the highland and<br />

intermediate zones. Introduction of Heifer Project International<br />

has proved successful and of much benefit to peasant farmers in<br />

the region. Further expansion of this project will not only raise<br />

their incomes from more milk sales but will too positively affect<br />

development of coffee/bananas farms by increasing the level of<br />

soil fertility through more cattle manure application.<br />

Another area of potential investment in livestock lies in<br />

strengthening of Artificial insemination project. Timely service<br />

required by livestock keepers is very essential in the improvement<br />

of the local breed or in multiplication of better dairy cattle. The<br />

already existing A.1 centres, many of them are non functioning<br />

through different reasons. Currently only 8 centres out of the 24<br />

centres are rendering service. The district concils and NGO could<br />
