It is observed in table XIV above that coffee production in<br />

1994/95 fell very significantly to 9421 tons from 17,207 tons<br />

produced in 1992/93. A drop in volume in 1994/95 must have<br />

been influenced by both wheather and coffee prices which fell<br />

down in 1990, and hence affecting production volume.<br />

Nonetheless coffee still remains the most important cash crop in<br />

the region and at national level it accounts for 36.4 percent of total<br />

national coffee production. Confirming further the importance of<br />

coffee in the region, particularly in Moshi Rural, Hai and Rombo<br />

districts, 68 percent of the planted area is under coffee/bananas<br />

whereas only 17 percent is so planted in Mwanga and Same<br />

district.<br />

In the region as a whole coffee/bananas crops occupy 23 percent<br />

of the total cultivated area followed by maize, bans/maize each at<br />
