Examination for Teachers (CSET)<br />

• For secondary credential programs, approved subject matter<br />

course work or the California Subject Examination for Teachers<br />

(CSET) for the appropriate subject<br />

The CBEST examination needs to be attempted by the time of<br />

admission and passed prior to being recommended to the Commission<br />

on Teacher Credentialing for a credential. The CSET or<br />

approved subject matter course work needs to be completed prior<br />

to beginning full-time student teaching; for details, see advising<br />

staff. Applicants are encouraged to have both of these requirements<br />

completed at the time of application. Credential requirements<br />

are revised by the State of California. To obtain the most<br />

current information, students considering a career in teaching are<br />

encouraged to consult with the School of Education advisers<br />

throughout their undergraduate career.<br />

M.A. Degree. Applicants to the Master’s in Education Degree program<br />

must have completed an undergraduate degree with a major<br />

in a field that supports their intended area of emphasis. A minimum<br />

undergraduate GPA of 3.000 is necessary for graduate admission<br />

at the University of California, <strong>Davis</strong>.<br />

Ed.D. Degree (JDPEL). Because the JDPEL program is jointly<br />

administered by <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> and CSU Fresno, applicants must meet<br />

the general admission requirements for both universities. These<br />

include: (a) a master's degree or equivalent from an accredited<br />

institution; and (b) a grade point average of at least 3.200 in upper<br />

division undergraduate and master's degree course work. Applicants<br />

must demonstrate high potential for educational leadership<br />

and scholarly achievement through professional experience, academic<br />

achievement and professional recommendations. Applicants<br />

possessing graduate degrees in fields other than education<br />

are encouraged to apply.<br />

Ed.D. Degree (CANDEL). Applicants to the CANDEL program<br />

must meet general admission requirements for graduate study at<br />

the University of California. Requirements include a bachelor's<br />

and master's degree (or equivalent) form an accredited institution,<br />

a GPA of at least 3.000. In addition, applicants will have demonstrated<br />

prior experience in administrative or leadership roles in<br />

educational institution or related areas.<br />

Ph.D. Degree. Applicants to the Ph.D. program in Education normally<br />

will have completed a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in a<br />

field that supports their intended area of emphasis. A minimum<br />

GPA of 3.000 in previous graduate course work is required for<br />

graduate admission at the University of California, <strong>Davis</strong>. Applicants<br />

must demonstrate a high potential for scholarly achievement<br />

and research. Individuals possessing graduate degrees in fields<br />

other than education are encouraged to apply. Experience in teaching,<br />

research, or related areas of education are desirable.<br />

APPLYING FOR ADMISSION<br />

School of Education students are admitted for fall term only, with<br />

the exception of the <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong>/CSU Sacramento Joint Elementary<br />

Teaching Credential Program. Applicants for the joint credential<br />

program are admitted in summer only. Applications are available<br />

each year after October 1. Application deadlines and requirements<br />

vary by program. Applicants with underrepresented or non-traditional<br />

backgrounds are encouraged to apply.<br />
