The college has a well-developed system of faculty advisers, student<br />

peer advisers and professional staff advisers who are available<br />

for individual consultations with undergraduates in a variety of<br />

settings, from the deans’ office to departmental offices to campus<br />

residence halls.<br />

The strength of the college lies in the faculty’s commitment to<br />

advancing the frontiers of human knowledge through research,<br />

artistic expression and other creative endeavors and to the effective<br />

communication and application of that knowledge through<br />

Graduate students at <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> have the opportunity to work with<br />

and learn from accomplished faculty, recognized for their contributions<br />

to research in their fields. The Office of Graduate Studies<br />

oversees more than 80 graduate programs leading to master's or<br />

doctoral degrees, which together enroll more than 4,000 graduate<br />

students. Many graduate programs are offered through graduate<br />

groups, an interdisciplinary concept that allows students to study<br />

and work in interrelated areas to broaden their intellectual experiences;<br />

see the Graduate Studies chapter.<br />

PROFESSIONAL STUDY<br />

<strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> has three professional schools—the School of Law<br />

(J.D.), the School of Medicine (M.D.) and the School of Veterinary<br />

Medicine (D.V.M., M.P.V.M.)—and the Graduate School of Management<br />

offers the M.B.A. degree. These schools and programs are<br />

described in later chapters.<br />

The <strong>General</strong> Library at <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> is one of the premier research<br />

libraries in North America. In addition to Peter J. Shields Library,<br />

there are four other <strong>General</strong> Library facilities: the Physical Sciences<br />

and Engineering Library, the Loren D. Carlson Health Sciences<br />

Library, the Agricultural and Resource Economics Library<br />

and the Blaisdell Medical Center Library in Sacramento. The combined<br />

collections of the various <strong>General</strong> Library facilities total<br />

more than 3.2 million volumes and more than 37,000 periodical<br />

and journal titles are received annually. An extensive variety of<br />

government documents, maps, microfilms and CD-ROMs are also<br />

part of the collection.<br />

Shields Library houses the collections in the humanities, arts,<br />

social sciences, biological sciences, agricultural sciences, mathematics<br />

and computer science. The Physical Sciences and Engineering<br />

Library collections support teaching and research in<br />

engineering, chemistry, geology and physics. The Carlson Health<br />

Sciences Library serves the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary<br />

Medicine. The Blaisdell Library at the <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> Medical Center<br />

provides a clinical collection of more than 41,000 volumes. The<br />

law library, administered by the School of Law, is located in King<br />

Hall.<br />

The <strong>General</strong> Library's HARVEST catalog identifies campus library<br />

resources, while the <strong>UC</strong> MELVYL online catalog identifies the<br />

library collections at <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> and the other nine <strong>UC</strong> campuses.<br />

The HARVEST catalog, MELVYL and other electronic resources,<br />

including more than 19,000 full text journals can be searched in<br />

the libraries, at campus locations and remotely via the Internet.<br />

Workstations with Internet access are available for patron use in<br />

all library facilities. A wireless network in Shields Library, the<br />

Physical Sciences and Engineering Library, the Carlson Health Sciences<br />

Library and the Blaisdell Medical Center Library connects<br />

authorized laptop users to library and campus resources and services.<br />

Information about library services, full text electronic books and<br />

journals, and important subject-specific Internet sites are available<br />

at the library's Web site. The library provides classes on the use of<br />

the HARVEST catalog, MELVYLand subject specific electronic<br />

journals and databases. Librarians are available for consultation to<br />

effectively and efficiently identify and use information resources<br />

for research projects and dissertations.<br />

<strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> Arboretum<br />

The 95-acre <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> Arboretum is a living museum with a documented<br />

collection of more than 22,000 trees, shrubs and perennials<br />

for use in teaching and research, arranged in a series of gardens<br />

along Putah Creek's historic north fork. Outstanding plant collections<br />

include Shields Oak Grove, Mary Wattis Brown Garden of<br />

California native plants, Ruth Storer Garden of flowering perennials<br />

and shrubs, T. Elliot Weier Redwood Grove and Arboretum<br />

Terrace home demonstration garden. Arboretum education programs<br />

promote sustainable and environmentally-appropriate gardening<br />

practices. Internships are available in nursery<br />

management, landscape design and maintenance, environmental<br />

education, conservation biology, Integrated Pest Management<br />

(IPM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).<br />

Information and Educational Technology (IET) provides computing,<br />

communications and digital media services to the campus in<br />

support of research and instruction. IET provides the following<br />

range of service and support to students.<br />

Computing Help and Information. IT Express, the campus computing<br />

help desk, provides assistance with many topics, including<br />

Internet software, campus Internet access, and activating and<br />

accessing your <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> e-mail and computing accounts. A comprehensive<br />

source for student computing information, the Student<br />

Computing Guide Web site (http://scg.ucdavis.edu), provides campus-related<br />

computing and technology news, computer room locations<br />

and hours, IT Express hours and much more. Students can<br />

also visit the TechNews Web site (http://technews.ucdavis.edu) and<br />

sign up to receive a weekly e-mail that includes links to the latest<br />

information on computer security, campus wireless and other<br />
