or Art Studio. The notion of “self,” “portraiture”<br />

and “identity” as it is defined in an electronic world<br />

and society. Hands-on projects plus theoretical<br />

art studio classes. Production techniques of<br />

video, including shooting, editing, lighting, sound<br />

Study of the documentary form with particular<br />

attention to hybrid forms of film, video and computer<br />

121. Reinterpreting Landscape (4)<br />

Studio—6 hours; lecture/discussion—2 hours. Prerequisite:<br />

course 2 or Nature and Culture 100 or<br />

consent of instructor. Interpretation of landscape<br />

through painting, drawing and related media, with<br />

emphasis on the integration of historical, cultural,<br />

natural and artistic contexts. Course includes field<br />

work culminating in an independent project. Not<br />

hard- and soft-ground, burin engraving and related<br />

Studio—8 hours; independent study—1 hour. Prerequisite:<br />

course 125, 126, 127, or 128. Development<br />

of intermedia printmaking; advanced modes in<br />

each of relief/serigraphy/intaglio/surface, as well<br />

as adding serigraphy and digitized imagery. Student<br />

will produce prints in several methods including<br />

132A. The Tradition of Modernism (4)<br />

Lecture—3 hours; discussion/laboratory—1 hour.<br />

Prerequisite: one of course 30, or Art History 183A,<br />

183B, 183C or 184. The emergence of modernism<br />

in painting and sculpture, from the early twentieth<br />

century to the 1940s. Critical examination of the<br />

emergence of modernism, the ideologies it supported,<br />

and the exclusions it practiced. Offered in<br />

132B. The Theory of Modernism (4)<br />

Lecture—3 hours; discussion/laboratory—1 hour.<br />

Prerequisite: course 132A. Re-examination of materials<br />

of Modernist art through a set of critical analytical<br />

tools which will help in understanding what<br />

cultural and ideological beliefs these art forms sustained.<br />

138. The Artist’s Book (4)<br />

Studio—6 hours. Prerequisite: courses 2, 5, and 7;<br />

course 110, 125, 126, 127, or 128. Creation of<br />

visual art work in the form of a unique artist’s book<br />

structure, in an edition of three. Examples of historical<br />

and contemporary artist’s books. A variety of<br />

media will be explored, including photography,<br />

printmaking, sculpture, and painting/drawing. May<br />

be repeated two times for credit when topic differs.<br />

application and exploration of a single sculptural<br />

material. Examination of its properties, qualities and<br />

of instructor. The Mural: a collective art process<br />

that empowers students and people through design<br />

and execution of mural paintings in the tradition of<br />

the Mexican Mural Movement; introduces materials<br />

and techniques. May be repeated once for credit.<br />

Internship. Supervised program of internships in artists’<br />
