Korea is well known for having a tradition of son preference. This<br />

preference for sons is rooted in Confucian values. Based on a patriarchal<br />

and patrilineal system, only sons can pass on family lineage and<br />

perform ancestor worship ceremony. In addition, sons, particularly the<br />

eldest, have had primary responsibility providing old age support for<br />

parents, although this tradition is becoming weaker.<br />

Despite strong preference for sons, swift industrialization and urbanization<br />

in Korea have led to a rapid fertility transition way below<br />

the replacement level during the past several decades. The total fertility<br />

rate (TFR) decreased sharply from about 6.0 in the early 1960s to the<br />

replacement level (2.1 children per woman) in 1983 and has now<br />

dropped to 1.16 in 2004.<br />

However, with this decline in fertility below the replacement level,<br />

serious distortions in sex ratio at birth began to emerge in the mid-<br />

1980s. The sex ratio at birth was estimated at 109.5 in 1985 and<br />

reached 115.2 in 1994. An examination of the sex ratio distribution by<br />

parity suggests that sex ratios at birth for the first child have been<br />

relatively low in the past two decades. However, high sex ratios at birth<br />

keep growing markedly as the birth order progresses. Figure 1 shows<br />

that sex ratios at birth for the third and the fourth child began to rise<br />

dramatically in the mid-1980s, and peaked at the highest level at over<br />

200 in the early 1990s. After then, a downward trend in sex ratio at<br />
