behaviour in Korea. It is not our intention to be judgmental or criticize
a certain religion because of its association with sex ratio at birth or its
stand on abortion. Rather, we attempt to provide explanations for high
sex ratio at birth and its regional variations, and thereby adopted religion
as an important cultural determinant. Further research on the
effects of religion, in particular Buddhism, in other Asian countries
may contribute to enhance our understanding of the causal mechanisms
of sex ratio at birth and sex-selective reproductive behaviour.
