to Srirangam to inquire into <strong>the</strong> cause. Meeting Maladhara, he<br />

asked for an explanation:— "Compeer!'" began Maladhara,<br />

" our studies never go on smoothly, for Ramanuja, I find, is too<br />

ranch for nie. He has an eternal store <strong>of</strong> new interpretations.<br />

For instance, we had a pas.sage-at-arms over St. Nammazhvar's<br />

ver-se Ariyd &a. [II. 3. 3.]. Whereas I construed it as<br />

conveying a spirit <strong>of</strong> invective against God for His ways <strong>of</strong><br />

dealing with souls, Ramanuja construed it<br />

as an expression <strong>of</strong><br />

gratitude to God, so as to make verse 3 harmonize with <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r verses <strong>of</strong> this Decad. Such a protesting spirit seemed<br />

to me a violation <strong>of</strong> a disciple's decorum, while his constructions<br />

also seemed at variance with our Yamuna's mind. Hence I had<br />

to stop studying with an eccentric pupil like Ramanuja." " But,<br />

pardon me," interrupted Piirna, " IlamAnuja is right, for I<br />

remember our Yamuna having so explained. You seem to have<br />

forgotten. Friend ! Ramanuja is incapable <strong>of</strong> going wrong.<br />

If any one knows Y3,muna's mind, it is he. Look upon him as<br />

like ano<strong>the</strong>r Krishna who went to Sandipani ' for instruction.<br />

You are but a pretence. He knows all. No more be under <strong>the</strong><br />

delusion that you are teaching him truths not already known to<br />

him. So, permit me as a friend, to laj- it on you henceforth<br />

as a sacred duty to continue <strong>the</strong> Tiru-vay-mozhi from where<br />

you dropped it ; even if, to do so, it were necessary on your part<br />

to wait on Ramanuja, instead <strong>of</strong> his waiting on you. He is<br />

such disciple as his Gurus must go to him." So saying,<br />

G. Piirna went to Ramanuja's monastery, accompanied by<br />

Mdl&dhara and Mahd,piirna. Seeing <strong>the</strong>m, RAraaijuja rose<br />

exultingly, au'I prostrating himself, welcomed <strong>the</strong>m all.<br />

G. Purna thus made peace and saw to <strong>the</strong> Prabandha-.studies<br />

being again pursued in right earnest.<br />

They sat to <strong>the</strong> study again under <strong>the</strong>se<br />

terms <strong>of</strong> conciliation.<br />
