BAMANUJA.<br />

His birth and sliulies.<br />

Yamun^harya was tlius troubled in his mind as to a competent<br />

successor to whom to hand.'j^n/ <strong>the</strong> Torch <strong>of</strong> Faith for<br />

posterity His disciple Nambi oi-MatApurna ' had proceeded<br />

to The Holy Mount <strong>of</strong> Tirupati to live <strong>the</strong>re for a time in <strong>the</strong><br />

service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord seated <strong>the</strong>rein (VenkatSchala-pati). He had<br />

two sisters, Bhumip-pirsitti and Periya-pir&tti, or Bhu-devi and<br />

Srx-devi. The elder Bhu-devi was maiTied to Asuri KeSavapperumal,<br />

<strong>the</strong> performer <strong>of</strong> many Yagas,—i-esiding at Sriperumbudur.^<br />

Sri-devi'was married to Kamalanayana-bhatta<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vatta-mani clan, residing at AJazhalai-mangalam.<br />

Of Bhu-devi * was born RS.tnanuja, <strong>the</strong> Great Keformer and<br />

Religionist <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1:2th century,'' just as RSima was born <strong>of</strong><br />

Kansalya and Krishna <strong>of</strong> Devaki. Of him it is written :<br />

" It is <strong>the</strong> First Atlanta that became Lakshmana next.<br />

And Balabhadra next, again <strong>the</strong> One next in Kali."<br />

And this One was <strong>the</strong> Great Rfijna,nuja born in <strong>the</strong> Kali<br />

Age, as <strong>the</strong> Spiritual Sun to dispel <strong>the</strong> darknes <strong>of</strong> sin and<br />

ignorance, reigning rampant as said in <strong>the</strong> verse :<br />
