thus shoving that everything that belongs to <strong>the</strong> Saviour is<br />
holy, and all else is unholj'. This demeanour proves <strong>the</strong><br />
acme <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> a spiritually risen soul dissevered from<br />
all touch <strong>of</strong> worldliness (vairagj-a.)<br />
Purna was strict as regards ths taking <strong>of</strong> Sri-pada-tirtha, for<br />
he sipped no water washed <strong>of</strong>f any o<strong>the</strong>r's<br />
foot save that "<strong>of</strong> his<br />
Saviour, Ram&nuja. He memorialized this faith, <strong>of</strong> his, by shaping<br />
au image <strong>of</strong> his feet and setting <strong>the</strong>m iip for worship for<br />
all time to come at th^ village <strong>of</strong> Sfi.ligr£ima—as <strong>the</strong> most<br />
cherishtfd treasui'e for himself and all posterity' ; and that it<br />
must be looked upon as such by all <strong>the</strong> coming generations, was<br />
<strong>the</strong> most solemn trust which he imposed on those near and dear<br />
to him, at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> his translation from <strong>the</strong> mundane. Vatupurna<br />
is thus assigned a place in <strong>the</strong> inner circle <strong>of</strong> Ramanuja's<br />
hierarchical institutions, called <strong>the</strong> Ashta-diggajas, or <strong>the</strong><br />
Eight Elephants <strong>of</strong> Faith to guard <strong>the</strong> eight cardinal points <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> coinpass." This sage it was who sang <strong>the</strong> famous hymn to<br />
Bditfianuja, called <strong>the</strong> RS,mannj-asthottara-Sata-nama, sung<br />
every day by every Sr! vaishnava. The last verse runs thus :<br />
' The meaning <strong>of</strong> this is that tliern, or sisters, or fa<strong>the</strong>r, or mowheu<br />
a spiritual relation with <strong>the</strong>r, or wife, or children, or lands<br />
spiritual jnen is established, that for my name's sake &c." [Mat.<br />
btcomrs holj-, and all affections XIX, 29] ; and " if anj man come"<br />
contracted with kinsmen who are to me and liate not his' fa<strong>the</strong>r, and<br />
worldly are contaminations. Their mo<strong>the</strong>r &c." [Luke XI V, 26].<br />

nistic to <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new mentioned on page 220, foot note ']<br />
spiritual relation. The parallel to have sung thus in <strong>the</strong>ir Yatirajathisidea<br />
is Jesus saying :— " Every sarva-bliauma-Sataka — ^TFtra^irr<br />
one that hath left house, or bro-<br />
