CHAPTER XXXIII.<br />

VATU-PURNA OH. ANDHRA-PDBNA.<br />

Vatu-purna or Andhra-purna, wliose first entry into our<br />

liistory may be remembered a.s having taken place when RamS,-<br />

naja was at Saligrama (Mysore),' is known, above all o<strong>the</strong>r disciples,<br />

to have .been <strong>the</strong> closest attached adher'ent <strong>of</strong> RamSoiuja,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> staunchest follower <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Path, known as <strong>the</strong> Paiichamopaya,<br />

or <strong>the</strong> Fifth Path—<strong>the</strong> Acharyabhimana," in o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

words, unswerving faith placed in <strong>the</strong> Saviour, who is incarnated<br />

on earth, and never dividing such faith between a saviour<br />

who has taken on humanity, and God who ever remains Divine.<br />

Vatu-purna was not a mere <strong>the</strong>oretical believer in this mode <strong>of</strong><br />

.salvation, but exemplified it forcibly by his personal example.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> exclusive worship he paid to R4manuja's Holy Feet, he<br />

excluded all thoughts <strong>of</strong> God. His Saviour was his God. He<br />

recognized no o<strong>the</strong>r rival Saviour-God to his visible human<br />

Saviour. Once on an occasion, RamiLnuja went to <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

shrine Tiruvellarai (about 10 miles north <strong>of</strong> Srirangam).<br />

Yatu-purna followed him <strong>of</strong> course, caiTying <strong>the</strong> Tiruppulkudai<br />

'containing washed clo<strong>the</strong>s, images, articles <strong>of</strong> worship,<br />

&c. Ramanuja, after reaching Tiruvellai-ai, went to ba<strong>the</strong> and<br />

i-eturning, opened <strong>the</strong> cover <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wallet to find to his surprise<br />

and chagrin that his own sandals had been placed on <strong>the</strong> top<br />
