also soared to <strong>the</strong> Etermal Regions, at this time ; and memorial<br />

verses were dedicated to <strong>the</strong>m as custom demanded.<br />

Thus ends a black chapter.^<br />

[It is chroniched <strong>of</strong> Kafichi-purna that it was a very dark<br />

night at <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> a day, when he had finished his services to<br />

Lord Varada, and had to go home. A torch-hearer by name<br />

Arulalan attached to <strong>the</strong> Temple was found on <strong>the</strong> premises.<br />

Purna begged <strong>of</strong> him to conduct him back to his relreat lighting<br />

<strong>the</strong> dark way with his torch. But he excused himself saying<br />

he was much tired that day, and slipped away, to sleep<br />

snuo- in a corner. Purna thought he would find his way in <strong>the</strong><br />

pitch-dark night as best as he could ;<br />

but hardly had he crossed<br />

<strong>the</strong> threshold <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Temple-gate, when <strong>the</strong>re was found a torchbearer<br />

with his torch, ready to conduct him home. Purna was<br />

glad that <strong>the</strong> man had kindly changed his mind for his sake.<br />

The next morning, however, when Purna came to <strong>the</strong> Temple<br />

to do <strong>the</strong> round <strong>of</strong> his duties, <strong>the</strong> torch-bearer ran towards<br />
