With difficulty he suppressed his rising emotions ;<br />

and at last,<br />

containing himself no longer, burst into a passion <strong>of</strong> gi'ief,<br />

dropped on <strong>the</strong> ground like a felled tree and rolled in <strong>the</strong> dust,<br />

wetting it with his burning tears. His disciples ga<strong>the</strong>red<br />

round him and did <strong>the</strong>ir best to console him. And he resigned<br />

himself at last, thanking God that KurSsa at least was alive,<br />

whom thus he had yet a chance to see, though <strong>the</strong> thought <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> his eyes was to him unbearable.<br />

Mahapurna, being his Guru, all <strong>the</strong> sacraments to be<br />

celebrated after death were duly performed such as Sri.-chilrnaparipdlana,<br />

and memorial verses ' were dedicated to him.<br />

RfiimsLnuja's heart was wrung with agony. He called<br />

M. M. And4n ' to his side, and directed him to proceed to Srirangam,<br />

carrying condolences aud a budget <strong>of</strong> news to KurSsa,<br />

and return with all <strong>the</strong> intelligence <strong>of</strong> that place ; and engaged<br />

himself more vigorously than ever in prelections on <strong>the</strong><br />

VedSiuta which he delivered to his devoted audiences.<br />

About this time, Goshthi-purna, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gurus <strong>of</strong><br />

B.§,m3,nuja, also died. His diciples ga<strong>the</strong>red round him and'<br />

asked him what were his thoughts in his last moments. He^<br />

said he was thinking <strong>of</strong> his Guru Yamun&chS,rya, and <strong>the</strong><br />

meaning <strong>of</strong> his verse :<br />

'<br />

Rdma Great, tcho forgave <strong>the</strong> miscreant Kdka !<br />

Krishna Cheat, who forgave <strong>the</strong> miscreant Chaitya !<br />

Hote can my sin persist against such grace <strong>of</strong> Thine ?<br />

So saying Purna died.<br />

And Terk-AzhvAr, his son, performed<br />
