INTRODUCTION<br />

<strong>Prosecut<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Crimes</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> presents contributions by <strong>Africa</strong>nbased<br />

scholars and <strong>in</strong>ternational crim<strong>in</strong>al law practitioners who are alumni<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Centre for Human Rights, that has been responsible for the Master’s<br />

degree programme <strong>in</strong> Human Rights and Democratisation <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

2000. The programme produced graduates with skills <strong>in</strong> human rights <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Africa</strong>. This book is a product <strong>of</strong> the concerted efforts by some <strong>of</strong> these<br />

graduates.<br />

Contributions are on different topics <strong>of</strong> importance to persons<br />

<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational crim<strong>in</strong>al justice as it applies <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>. This book<br />

is aimed at a range <strong>of</strong> stakeholders <strong>in</strong> the field <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational law and<br />

human rights <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>. Specifically, it is relevant to persons <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />

post-graduate studies, researchers, members <strong>of</strong> national and <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

judicial bodies and <strong>in</strong>ternational crim<strong>in</strong>al law practitioners. The book is<br />

divided <strong>in</strong>to four parts. Part I deals with general issues <strong>in</strong> the prosecution<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational crimes. Part II focuses on the prosecution <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

crimes before <strong>in</strong>ternational courts: the ICTR, ICC, and the SCSL. Part III<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>es the prosecution <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational crimes before national courts,<br />

particularly Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal, Rwanda, and Uganda. Part IV<br />

deals with the implementation <strong>of</strong> the Rome Statute <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n states. The<br />

states covered <strong>in</strong> this regard are Malawi, Zambia and South <strong>Africa</strong>. The<br />

issue <strong>of</strong> positive complementarity is covered <strong>in</strong> respect <strong>of</strong> Uganda, the<br />

Democratic Republic <strong>of</strong> the Congo and Sudan.<br />

Consist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 14 chapters, the book contributes to the rule <strong>of</strong> law and<br />

respect for human rights <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the<br />

eradication <strong>of</strong> the culture <strong>of</strong> impunity <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>. All contributions deal with<br />
