Palm oil prices in internationalmarket increased from $1,088 per ton in July 2011to $1,152 per ton in March 2012; an increase of 6percent. Pakistan Economic Survey 2011-12A review of the price trend of essentialcommodities during the period (Jul-Apr) 2011-12suggests that the current price hike is the outcomeof rising food prices which influenced overallinflation. Prices of vegetable, fruit, meat andchicken (farm) etc. experienced larger increaseduring the period July 2011 to April 2012. Theprices of essential items have increased for aTable:7.12 Prices of Essential Itemsvariety of reasons. The increase in price of chicken(farm), fresh milk, beef and mutton is attributableto supply shortage of these items in the market.The increase in prices of tomatoes and onion isowing to damage to the crops by the floods as wellas seasonal volatility. The grampulse presents an increase of 36 percent. This wasdue to the prolonged winter season andunfavourable climate resulted in delay of its supplyas a result gram pulse was imported while theprices in international market were also rising.Tomato being a heavy weight item, its pricesremained high during April 2012, and at one pointin time it showed an increase of 67 percent, thiswas due to seasonal affect as major crops oftomatoes in Sindh was destroyed. Now with thearrival of this vegetable from Punjab, a declinedtrend in its prices was noted in May 2012.
