However, uponrequest of the provinces, the Council ofCommon Interests (CCI) in its meeting held on28 th April 2011 decided that the federalgovernment (Planning and DevelopmentDivision) shall fund these programs till currencyof the 7 th NFC award at a predefined share.Accordingly, the following national healthprogrammes continue to be financed by thefederal government in the post devolutionscenario till 2014-15.1. National Program for Family Planningand Primary Health CareThe program has recruited more than 103,000LHWs as of March 2012. More than 60 percentof the total population and 76 percent of thetarget population is covered by LHWs. Out of 30million children, about 16 million wereimmunized by LHWs during NationalImmunization Days (NIDS) Similarly, in highrisk districts out of 5 million target women, 4.5million were vaccinated by LHWs.2. Expanded Program on ImmunizationThe National EPI Program providesimmunization against the seven killer diseases -childhood tuberculosis, poliomyelitis,diphtheria, pertussis, neonatal tetanus, measlesand hepatitis B. Initiated in 1978, the EPIprogramme is an effective public healthintervention that has a great impact on the healthof the population. By reducing the cost oftreating diseases, immunization offersopportunities for poverty reduction. Every year anation wide National Immunization Day (NID)is carried out to give polio vaccine to all childrenbelow 5 years of age. The mass immunizationcampaign has gained a great deal of acceptanceacross the country.155
