13SWITCHGEARReplacement Breakers & Retrofit ProductsSafety Racking SolutionsSiemens GM Switchgear ElectricRacking AccessoryAn optional electric racking accessory isavailable for 5-15kV GM, GM-SG, and38kV GM38 switchgear. The switchgearrequires modifications to the front panelto add mounting adapters for the motordrive mechanism. The accessoryconsists of a motor drive enclosurewhich installs on mounting brackets onthe switchgear front panel of a circuitbreaker compartment. The unit includesa power cord, which can be connectedto a convenient power source in thevicinity of the switchgear. Instructionsfor mounting the racking accessory andfor racking of circuit breakers areprovided on a label on the rackingaccessory.Allis-Chalmers D and F Switchgear—Closed Door Racking ModificationIn order to improve operator safety,Siemens offers a field modification toconvert type D and F switchgear to aclosed-door, remote rack design. Thismodification provides a cost effectivesolution to keep operators clear of thearc flash zone during breaker racking.Allis-Chalmers and later Siemensmanufactured type D and F mediumvoltageswitchgear from 1958 throughthe late 1980’s. This gear utilized airmagneticbreakers that were typicallymanually racked via a lever while thecubicle panel door was open. The field modification consists of a floormountedscrew racking device and abreaker-mounted bracket to interfacewith the floor-mounted screw device. These additions allow end-users toeither have closed-door manual racking,or closed-door remote racking. The closed-door remote racking optionrequires the above mentioned cell andbreaker additions, as well as a minorfront panel modification to accept atorque-regulated motor. The motor canbe moved from one cell position to thenext, thus only one motor device isrequired.Figure 7 Motor drive mounted on CBcubicle door. Before: Original floor-mounted leverracking, commonly used on type D and Fswitchgear, required the operator to standin front of the breaker with the panel dooropen.Manuf.
