PARTICIPATORY TOOLS USED IN THE MPA6.9 Matrix votingAccess to training by gender <strong>and</strong> social class, in NepalPurposeused for doing the jobs may be used as symbols.Matrices are used to assess the division of skilled<strong>and</strong> unskilled, paid <strong>and</strong> unpaid work related tothe water service <strong>and</strong>/or sanitation, betweenwomen <strong>and</strong> men, rich <strong>and</strong> poor.The same activity can also be used to assess accessto <strong>and</strong> income from training or productive uses ofwater, for women <strong>and</strong> men, rich <strong>and</strong> poor.ProcessWithin the group (which may be the members ofthe water <strong>and</strong> sanitation committee or male/femalefocus groups in the poor <strong>and</strong> wealthier sections),the construction, maintenance <strong>and</strong> managementwork done for the water supply <strong>and</strong>/or sanitationis identified. Participants prepare a card label foreach job. In case of low literacy levels amongparticipants, drawings of the jobs or implementsThe group then discusses which jobs are skilled/only for the trained <strong>and</strong> have a high status <strong>and</strong>which jobs involve only unskilled physical labor<strong>and</strong> are low status. They sort the cards into thetwo categories.The facilitator then draws a matrix on the groundor on a large piece of paper with three rows <strong>and</strong>three columns. The second <strong>and</strong> third columnsget labels or pictures of “women” <strong>and</strong> “men.” Inthe first cells of the second <strong>and</strong> third row, thefacilitator places or writes the identified skilled<strong>and</strong> unskilled jobs.Using colored slips, beans or other local material,the participants then put the numbers of women<strong>and</strong> men who carry out the identified tasks in therespective cells of the matrix. Different colors orshapes may be used to denote women <strong>and</strong> men81
